Today we are travelling 200km to the site of the first main settlement so you are going to see a mountain, some ruins and then the modern city. Another full day with stops , speeding and beeps as you pass other vehicles, ready?

Along the coast
Through checkpoints
Stake fences but some grow to form a hedge
Through villages
And crops….rice, vegetables and fruit.
Wasn’t the place we stopped for lunch interesting…….lots of artwork, gardens……..oh , and the lunch..it was great vegetable kottu and fruit.

There was a surprise visitor having lunch in the male toilet.
A Rat snake with its frog lunch
In early Sri Lanka history many of the substantial buildings and structures were either related to the royalty or to Buddhist monks. This area is particularly known for the monastery ruins that were first discovered and cleared by the British. Our first stop, I think is really spectacular and peaceful. Kalualya Pokuna was once home for a large monk community

.

It is certainly it is peaceful. I think I could cope.
You could relax, say a few prayers , go for a swim….

Not far from this monastery , was another monastery with an extensive hospital complex, Kaluiyapokuna, for the monks. It included a massage area and hot water/ and oil treatment in a  body shaped stone. How  would  you  feel  lying  in  it? It is a bit creepy, like the bottom half  of  a  sarcophagus.
I don’t think I would like to lie in this for treatment.
