Grab your hat, slather yourself with sunscreen , you are off on a boat today.

Birds visit many of the small islands of the Hebrides in summer . It is still Summer in Scotland, in fact it is to be 22 degrees. A positive heat  wave! First stop Staffa. Be careful getting off the boat. Hang on to the railing. Don’t fall. Staffa was made an ancient volcano. It’s lower layers are basalt columns. Where weaknesses have formed, the ocean has swept in and gradually eroded the joints. The columns fall forming caves like Fingal Cave.

Other islands in this area are also volcanic in origin. They are known as the Treshnish. Islands. There is one know as Castle Island, another as Dutch hat and yet another as Submarine Island. This was torpedoed by the British in WW2 as it was mistaken for a submarine.   Dutch hat

 Castle  Island

    Submarine Island

Originally these Islands could only be occupied by clan leaders. They are no longer inhabited.

You and I , we are not twitchers. It is quite relaxing watching birds and other animals in their own environment.

Lunga has heaps of birds but the scenery, and feeling of peace is amazing. There are the ruins of a settlement and you wonder why anyone would leave the beauty of the place.

Puffins are mega cute. They have fat bodies and their wings go so fast that they look like wind-up toys. Fascinating  to watch, it is easy to take umpteen photos.Unfortunately I  failed you….none are perfect but some are fun. It is all good though cos I borrowed some excellent ones with fish from my other traveller friends.

Tomorrow we’re checking out the rest of the Island and then back to the mainland. Look at the lichen on this island, get some rest and pack your bags and then be ready for more adventures.
