Buenos Aires is a vast city made up of different areas. The original port area was filled with immigrants . Many of these arrived with little money or education and went to work in the port. There was a predominance of males . The areas were considered slums and there are still area of slums here

Villa Miseries
Modern vs slum

When you consider 54% of the population are below the poverty line ($314 per month) , you can understand how difficult it is for families. La Boca was one such area but is now a vibrant tourist attraction.

The middle class area is separated from the slum by the road.

The residents of La Boca decided to paint their houses with leftover paint from the port and created the vibrant area that is still maintained today. Tango is said to have originated here too. The men would dance together and create a routine to attract the ladies From this it evolved to the present day Tango , so expect colour and Tango.

Plaster models are used to add personality to the windows.

There are 2 real people here. Can you see them?
And the Tango just outside a café

It is so vibrant isn’t it. They have certainly created a colourful fun environment. Shop owners try to employ local children forced to leave school to help the family. This gives them the chance to get better positions. Some hope they will be discovered like some famous Argentina soccer players.

I hope it isn’t lonely up there.

The original warehouses of the old port have been converted to upmarket units , restaurants and shops.

Look there is a demonstration. There is drums, signs, green and white umbrellas….. and lots of police in riot gear. Exciting, especially while we are watching safely from a coffee shop.

More drums and chanting
Lots of police
Ready for anything but everyone was peaceful,
