Heimaey (Hi May) is part of a small group of volcanic islands called the Westman Islands. with 5000 people, Heimaey is the biggest. Two islands near Heimaey. Ellidaey and Bjarnaery each have one lodge . I am not sure how you get there but it is definitely isolated if you want to get away from everything including people.

Recorded settlement happened in 900AD but it is possible people were living on the island before that time. History records 2 Irish slaves reaching there but were killed. Their legacy is place names on the islands. Like other parts of Iceland, slavers took people from the island. Some of us may remember when Eldfell exploded and caused havoc to the air traffic. 400 homes here were destroyed.
Well no pictures because no visit. They have just announced that they can’t take the tenders into shore because the sea is tooooo rough.
Disappointed? I know you are and so am I but let’s just enjoy looking at the rugged coastline.

Yes ,that is a house.

Heimaey so close and yet so far away.

Did you enjoy lunch in the sun?
