Have a great sleep? Bags in the car and let’s go. Today we are heading to Dunedin , with just a feeeeew stops on the way.
First we let’s start with a stop to ‘smell the roses ‘ at the Timaru Botanical Gardens.
Next stop is some interesting rocks. They are granite rocks that are embedded in the clay cliffs and eventually fall onto the beach ( no aliens interferred and sent these , no rocks falling from space etc.)
Lovely landscapes then Ōamaru!
Ōamaru is known for two things..,,,its magnificent Victorian architecture and…….wait for it ……an active Steampunk art movement.
Fun signs, well maybe spending the night in a loo may be a worry.
Wasn’t brunch interesting!
Lured by those yummy smells, I forced myself to go to the bakery. Coffee, a pie and the best ever Chelsea bun called my name. What did you end up with?
Soon we are on our way to Port Chalmers. This is a historical port still used to export timber. Did you see the Viking Orion? That was the ship we were on last year.
Now you know you need to understand the history or culture of an area. Yes we are going to the local museum. It is a mixture of the maritime and everyday town history. Sorry, you will not find anything of mine in a future museum. Music was important in this town with lots of bands . How about these instruments.
Everyone has heard of the Titanic. In New Zealand, they held a competition to develop a better life jacket. Any of the escapees from the Titanic died by the cork life jacket rising, jerking up and breaking the person’s neck . A women , named after the ship Orpheus (poor women) won with a jacket filled with kapok.
Not far now to Dunedin but a coffee stop is needed.
This is a quirky spot.
The locals must have a great sense of humour as they are all supporting their Turdis. It’s been nominated for an award in a competition between local towns and businesses.
Here is historical Dunedin. Hotel, a walk, dinner!
Well another day’s adventures . Tomorrow we are on a historical train. Meet you at 8.00am.
