You are looking rather rosy. Feeling woosey or even queasy. Too much sun perhaps. You will be glad that today is fairly quiet with two quick visits to places before a ferry ride back to the mainland. Sit back and relax as you check out the scenery.

Oh I whipped in to the Mull Heritage Centre. My favourite story was about a ship going from one port to another in Newfoundland. A storm destroyed the wheelhouse and lifeboats so the ship drifted.Three versions were given of what turned out to be a 48 day ordeal in Winter. The most amusing was of a passenger who was so overcome by the experience that she needed to drink all the Xmas wine she was carrying to a family event. One cup of tea and two ships biscuits were not enough. They eventually drifted near the Island of Mull and were rescued. Even the Captain was unsure where they were.

Do you remember your history lessons from school and hearing about Governor Lachlan Macquarie. He did try to civilise the colony and his wife tried to help the less fortunate. Well he is buried on the Island of Mull along with his wife and children. He has a sturdy brick building to commemorate his life.

The signs leading to the mausoleum are interesting……..we have moved from a weak road to…..

I hope you followed all the rules, I certainly was exceptionally well behaved.

Next stop is Duart Castle. This is the clan castle for the McLean family and all the names derived from this family. The McLean family has been respected and supported by both overseas and local families.  It is a relaxed property complete with shop and cafe and the family still live there.

Because of choosing the wrong side with the Jacobite uprising, the castle was removed from the family and fell into ruin. It was rebuilt with a few modcons in the 1920’s. This is the before photos.

1920’s  and on improvements.

 1940’s decor.

There are other family memorabilia through the castle up to present day residents. You can wander at leisure but I liked the views from the top best. How about you?

It it would have been magic for the children growing up here.
