We are nearly in Negombo. Get your senses ready as we are going to a fish market!

It is busy.

Negombo is a fishing town. The Portuguese settled here , and then the Dutch hence the predominance of Christian religions.

Going out to fish
The fish market
Guaranteed, fresh from the sea
Dried is also available

Some of the catch is washed in sea water. Soaked for three days and then dried in the sun.🌞

Women bone and fillet the fish
Men skin the fish

Once skinned and filleted. The fish goes into barrels with salt water and salt. The barrel is closed. After three days , it is laid out on coir matting . It is left to dry and only covered at night or if it rains. It is sorted by size and type.

Drying can take 3-5 days depending on the weather and fish type.
Shaking out the fish so it can be collected and rinsed
Rinsing anchovies
Bringing it in to be salted in a barrel

Once the fish have been salted properly and spread out, other workers move the fish around to ensure they are fully dried

Moving the fish around

Ready for dry fish curry? The smell or the process put you off?

No one bathing here
Call Uber eats! Rice and curry please. If it is all the same to you , I might give it a miss.😄
