”We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world, and the best we can find in our travels is an honest friend”, Robert Louis Stevenson.
Well we are hoping to find 16 friends because we joined the group today as we head off to the wilds of Scotland starting with the Holy Island, Lindisfarne, Yes we are going by train.
The village is larger than we expected and can only be reached at low tide. It is best described as picturesque but you judge it yourself.
Lindisfarne is considered the home of religion in England. If you watched the show, Vikings, on SBS , you would also know it was a very popular raiding spot for the them. The castle was built as a response to these raiding parties. It was home for 40 soldiers. When it was no longer of military importance, the castle was abandoned until it was bought and renovated in 1920’s. It became a summer holiday home for the new owner.
The views views were amazing. I’d be happy to have a holiday here. Surprisingly, the local people didn’t get to see inside the castle. They worked the lime kilns below the castle, fished and picnicked in the yard but very few would actually have seen the inside.
A vegetable garden for the soldiers became a garden of leisure. Designed by a famous garden designer of the time, it is a riot of colour.
Well that’s your lot. It’s cold and I’m tired. How about you? See you tomorrow.
