Another early start as it is Sunday and many of the locals visit their historical sites.

Children off to visit their local religious school

Children are sent off to their various religious institutions to learn about their faith. Mum and dad may go to work or relax. Us, we are not relaxing, we are going to a museum and then to the ancient ruins of a city.

From the ruins
No pictures allowed inside

The information and artefacts were really interesting especially showing the settlement and development of the people. India and China did influence them but the irrigation system one of the ancient kings developed was amazing. It would have saved his people during drought times as he created dams and a sluice system.Your favourite? I liked the intricate iron statues.

Next stop, the city. Polonnaruva was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993 . It is extensive and includes a fabulous garden-city created by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century and an area that was occupied by monks. (No , I copied the names and I can’t say them)

Extensive, isn’t .
We were to all ride bikes. Funny that you and I piked out when it was already 35 degrees.
If you are a naughty monk you come here to declare your crime in public and the you are isolated for a time

Many of the relics remaining are stupas where precious items were interned so they couldn’t be looted.

Stupa for Tooth Fairy?
A temple
Carvings remaining on temple
Lotus columns on temple. The roof would have been wood
Inside a temple. There is a window on the left that shines light on an area that once had a standing Buddha with gems for eyes. Light effects!
Buddhas in the temple
Drinking water
This used to be a monks room , but look at the power of termites lifting the floor slabs
Standing
Painted, restored stupa
Foundation of Monks cell , there would have been a wooden structure on top
Moon step ,the carvings are to reflect life’s phases
Another temple
The rock Buddhas all carved into one rocky outcrop

The rock Buddhas were amazing when you realise they are all carved into a piece of rock Imagine if you made a mistake! There is a seated , standing and reclining Buddha. A cave is also carved out with beautiful columns. Inside is Buddha in heaven preaching

Seated
Standing
Reclining

Column on Buddha cave
Since you hadn’t seen enough Buddhas or stupa…one on the way back
A very tall statue
A view of the town

You know you have to look at the craft of the area. Here it is wood. Beautiful but not my taste or price. Did you buy!

Masks
The wood objects were fabulous and so was his explanation about acids how they create the colours for the wood.

Believe it or not, it’s rest time. A

Swim, cocktail (made from local Arrack) potent, dinner and bed. The alcohol is potent.

Early start again tomorrow! 5.00am to get to Lion Rock before the heat of the day.
