Guernsey , like Jersey has moved beyond just agriculture . The movie Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, has introduced the world to the history of the Channel Islands. For most of us, WW2 was the war in Europe , the desert or Asia , countries occupied was not something we really thought about. The Channel Islands did have a more civilised occupation than Europe but their people did experience starvation and lost their freedom. Like Jersey there is physical signs in bunkers and lookouts.
Around Peter Port, the land is hilly, in fact to get to our hotel you have to walk up heaps of steps or down heaps of steps. You are guaranteed to get aerobic exercise just going to the shops. Building look older and less cared for in the main city but there are beautiful streets with Victorian style shops. Flowers are everywhere to celebrate summer.
Now if you thought the roads were narrow in Jersey, they were nothing like the streets here. Most of them are single car width and many hiccups happen as cars work out how to manoeuvre past each other.
Out of the town , houses are in little villages or suburbs. Rural land also gives a feeling of space. Wildflowers are everywhere. If you get hungry, most of them are escaped plants the Romans used for food….pretty and yummy.
Neolithic burial sites are found here. I wouldn’t have recognised that it was even there unless it was pointed out. The main room lintel was probably a standing stone that was repurposed.
Now have you got time on your hands. You too can create a mosaic building. Two catholic brothers constructed this chapel and decorated it. Now it is a major attraction. Children at the local school maintain it and add pieces as needed.
Off to the neighbouring island of Sark tomorrow. You get to sleep in because the ferry doesn’t go until 10.00. Wear comfy shoes as there is lots of walking.
