Crazy I know but we are braving another Tuk Tuk ride. You were impressed when we actually negotiated, with help, an exact price including a half hour waiting time for a trip to the only big public park in Colombo.

Alias…Victoria Park.

The park is peaceful with beautiful trees. Many of them are old with gnarled trunks. The British planted traditional trees but the soils here are sandy and shallow so some have come down and will be sold to furnishing manufacturers. Wasn’t the old gardener charming although we knew he would like a tip at the end.

The big birdbath or first of the ponds with the new town hall in the background.

There was a train?
More ponds , no fountains working today
Boating anyone?
An umbrella under an umbrella?

Is that rain? Are you ready to go? Back to our Tuk Tuk and we will take photos as we go with perhaps a stop or two…

Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Temple

No don’t ask me to say that! You know I get tongue tied over the simplest names. I do know it is the oldest Hindu temple in Colombo and dedicated to Ganesha and Shiva and was built by the local community in 1793.

Looking inside

Did you want to go in? No , let’s keep going.

Lotus tower( restaurant owned and operated by the Chinese)
Beira lake
Old town Hall 1910. Yes it does look like a church.
High doors for ventilation
The meeting was so long that they turned into statues
The community still uses this space but bottom is for fire services

A few local sights …..

I want….
Bunnings Colombo style
Independence Hall and Garden

These are cast and made in concrete with designs then added
I don’t think the elephant thinks it is brewing happiness
Who is it?

We are off to High tea at the Galle Face hotel. It was built in the late 1800’s as a gentlemans club. Lucky for us , it is now a posh hotel. Ready….it is just a short walk.

The old days
Galle Face Hotel now

Mike’s mum came here 75years ago on her way to Australia.

High Tea as a buffet
The view from the verandah
Ready? Where shall we start?
A little windy but tea with a book, perfect.

Near the hotel is a green where many locals come in the afternoon to relax with their children.

Bubbles
Balloons anyone?
Is it a bird … or a kite
Kites
Paddle?

We were watching children paddling and swimming. Swimming is not common here as one dad had a rope attached to his child so he couldn’t go out too far.

Well as you can see , the sun is setting. Time to walk back to the hotel. I don’t know about you but I don’t think I will worry about dinner. Bag out at 9.00am and we head off at 10.00am. See you at breakfast
