How are the legs? Ready for another day in Tórshavn? It’s not raining. It’s just foggy.

No worries, we’re off to visit gardens in the town centre and Nordic House. Vioarlundin Park is a little green oasis in the city. Perfect for mums with toddlers as there are fish and ducks to feed. That fast moving stream contains trout and no I didn’t go fishing.

Onwards we go. Yes I know it’s uphill but just think it will be downhill on the way back and it is only another kilometre or so. Look a sign, we are nearly there. The Nordic house combines features of Faroe Island, Danish, Åland Islands, Norway, Sweden, Greenland and Iceland. It is designed to showcase the art, music and culture of these countries. Exhibitsand events are constantly changing. We arrived at the wrong time for the music events but looked at a music video and art displays. Outside in the garden area are examples of local sculptures.

Within the building are spaces that can be used for different purposes as required. Even the concert area can be divided for two different events or opened to make a huge area. As you enter the building , there is an open area with tables of craft for children. A cafe and books for relaxing. Down a ramp leads you to three exhibit areas. Up the ramp opens onto a theatre, conference and further exhibit area. School children come to the building to learn traditional dances and today there were families enjoying the facilities. It has an inviting feel.

Sorry you can’t stay and relax any longer. You have another light uphill walk to the Skansen. This is the remains of a fort built in the 1600’s in response to an attack by Turkish pirates. Further fortifications were added in the 1700’s.

There was a fabulous, if foggy view of the harbour and we watched , and heard the ferry arriving. Tórshavn is very much a working port.

One place I really enjoyed visiting was the Cathedral. Yes, I know you are going to say not another church. This one is very simple with a blue ceiling  with ships suspended. It is in use and you can feel it is part of the community.

Summer all year round!

Did you think I missed the interesting or quirky sights? Your mistaken.

Down the alley?
Dinner?

Oops sorry forgot to tell you yesterday, I saw puffins again. I didn’t photograph them for you but I’m sure you will cope. Also, the national flower is a buttercup and this is the national costume.

Silver buttons, buckles and embroidery are important elements in the costume for both men and women. I’m not sure about those shoes.

Back in the vehicle without a name tomorrow as we head north. See you then.
