After all the excitement of the safari, travelling in a bus is a bit of a letdown, don’t you think. We will be stopping at Rawana Falls and Ella. Yes there is a village called Ella and if that is your name you will see it on everything. You will feel important. I won’t , nor you…not our names.

Rawana Falls

On the way they were harvesting the rice. Families and neighbours gather and process the crop together as it is often too wet for machines. It is all done by hand

Fields with mountains in distance

Ella is very much a tourist town. The historical train stops here. It brings people from everywhere. Many international visitors as well as locals come for hiking so lots of cafes, bars and restaurants.

High on the tree
Don’t eat the seed
You break it into small pieces

What do you think of the Jack Fruit? I think it is like a lychee for texture and as a similar flavour.

Ravana Hindu temple
It is impressive but it is cold and raining…let’s visit it another time

Here is the hotel. It was built as a private house and then expanded into a hotel in1891. grand by name and nature.

The sitting area near the bar….cocktail bar and corridor of famous visitors
The lounge area

Do you feel important knowing you are staying where many famous people have? There is so many area where you can sit and relax both inside and in the gardens…..maybe not the latter today.

Ooops missed the sign and went into the garden
Side garden
Do you think that is supposed to be a lion?
From the garden
Staff all wear clothes from an earlier period

Let’s go explore the village….you won’t melt and the rain may stop. Many of the buildings have an English style since many early visitors were English and came here to avoid some of the hotter periods.

Delivery?
Memorial clock….working once in memory
Shops
Post Office
Pigeon paradise
Off the Main Street
The bank

Just off the Main Street is a beautiful garden also dating back to the 1800’s

Off side entrance
The slow way to mow the grass
There is a lot to mow
Rose garden
Near children’s area
Coffee and dry off time

No lunch today…we are off to High Tea

High Tea

Now you have had tea, it’s time to check out the tea process at tea production. It has been making tea for 150 years.

Tea plants on the hill. This is better for water management and growing the plants.
2.5 tons are picked and dried by fans with someone turning the tea all night
Chopping , sorting and drying
Further drying using heat and packaging. It then goes to a government auction. Only 20% is kept for the owner to sell at their shop.
Types of tea and not even flavoured yet with oils or herbs.

We have quite a day haven’t we. Dinner and a quiet night I think don’t you. It is an early day tomorrow as we go to catch the historical train. Sleep well.
