Our journey from Napier to Wellington coincided with a cold blast from Antartica…..it was snowing in the South Island. Consequently , the few Brown tourist signs were ignored so we could safely reach Wellington before peak hour.
Masterton was a welcome coffee stop.
Arriving in Wellington , we got to experience the true Wellington character…….strong winds, sleet, rain and chill. A quick trip was taken to Mt Victoria for the view. We had not packed for winter.
Wellington was night was magical, even in the rain.
Rain forecast but we dodged the worst and visited the main sights: Cable car and it’s museum, Botanical Gardens and of course the Wellington Museum.
It is easy is easy to walk from the Gardens to the city just like people did in the 1800’s…..cable up and walk down.
Wellington Museum shows the history of the city and particularly its maritime past. One particular shipwreck affected the city and that was the “Wahine”. It was wrecked during a severe storm. Everyone got off the ship but some of the lifeboats upturned and people drowned or succumbed to hyperthermia.
Now with the rain coming in, we visited an art museum to have coffee and a little culture. Around Wellington there are sculptures and other installations to remind you of New Zealand’s different connections with people ,the land and sea.
Hi Sue and Mike
